Press Release: Prize Ceremony of best_ed Award
The Prize Ceremony of the Premio Europeo de Diseño y Medio Ambiente /
European Environmental Design Award, best_ed. organised by DIMAD and the
Central de Diseño de Matadero Madrid was held on Wednesday 24 March 2010, at
20:00 h .
The Central de Diseño de Matadero Madrid, on the occasion of the prize ceremony of
the best_ed award, welcomed significant personalities in the world of design,
architecture and education and training throughout the evening of Wednesday, 24th
March.
Within the framework of this event, an afternoon coffee was held attended by the
winners and those who received a special mention, together with some of the
practitioners who took part in the project. After the event, there was a guided tour of the
exhibition, led by Mr Manuel Estrada, chairman of DIMAD (Madrid Designers’
Association). This guided tour had been specially designed for the representatives of
the Institutions which have collaborated in this first edition.
After the official Welcome address by Carlos Baztán, Creativity Support coordinator
from the Arts Sector of Madrid City Council, the best_ed award was introduced by
Manuel Estrada, DIMAD’s chairman, followed by the scientific director of the Jury, Ms
Rosa Arce, from the Department of Land Organisation, Town planning and
Environment of the Higher Technical School (ETS, its Spanish acronym) for
Road Engineers (UPM). The ensuing speeches were given by Mr Carlos Magro,
Communication and Marketing Director of the EOI Industrial Organisation School,
Mr Alfonso Albacete, chairman of Fundación Arte y Derecho (Art & Law Fundation)
and Mr Enrique Jiménez Larrea, General Director of IDAE (Institute for Energy
Diversification and Saving)/ Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.
And finally, the most eagerly awaited event of the evening: The prize ceremony.
The prizes were given to projects and actions carried out in the last five years (2003-
2008). Manuel Estrada highlighted that “beyond aesthetic values, what has been most
valued and taken into account is the projects’ initiative, gesture and true commitment to
the environment, all of them proposals where ecological thinking and attitudes have
priority”.

/ Trashdesignmanufaktur, Austria Creative director and designer Magdalena
Höller receives the prize.
Prize to “Eco by Cosentino” carried out by Cosentino (Spain).
Eduardo Cosentino, Managing Director of Cosentino receives the prize.

Special Mention for “Spanish Pavilion for the Expo Zaragoza 2008” carried
out by Mangado y Asociados S.L., Spain.
Special Mention for “Wikado”carried out by 2012 Architekten, The Netherlands.
Architect Jos de Krieger receives the prize; the scientific director of the Jury,
Ms Rosa Arce, Department of Land Organisation, Town Planning and
Environment of the H.T. School for Road Engineers at the UPM gives the prize.
First Prize for “WWF Netherlands Head Office” carried out by RAU, The
Netherlands.
Head of WWF project Peter Hol receives the prize; Carlos Magro,
Communication and Marketing Director of EOI Industrial Organisation School
gives the prize.

Special mention for “W+W (Washbasin+Watercloset)”, carried out by Buratti +
Battiston Architects for Roca Sanitarios, Italy-Spain.
Architect and interior design professor Gabriele Buratti and Ernest Hernandez
of Roca Sanitarios receive the prize; Manuel Estrada, chairman of DIMAD
gives the prize.

Special Mention to “Écodesign, Chemins Vertueux (Ecodesign, Virtuous
Roads )”,carried out by Fabrice Peltier and Henri Saporta / P’Reference,
France.
Expert on Packaging Design Fabrice Peltier receives the prize; Enrique
Jiménez Larrea ,General Director of IDAE (Institute for nergy Diversification
and Saving) /Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade gives the prize.
First Prize for “The eco-design handbook” carried out by Alastair Fuad-Luke /
Thames and Hudson, United Kingdom.
The winner and specialist in sustainable design Alastair Fuad-Luke was not
present at the ceremony; a recording was shown.

Special mention for “WWF Paper Dispenser” carried out by Cliff Kagawa
Holmand and Silas Jansson / Saatchi&Saatchi, Denmark.
Saatchi&Saatchi’s Art directors Silas Jansson and Cliff Kagawa Holm receive
the prize; Alfonso Albacete, Chairman of Fundación Arte y Diseño gives the
prize.
Special Mention for “Reinicia” (Restart) carried out by Eduardo del Fraile
(Spain).
Eduardo del Fraile is awarded the prize and Ana del Fraile receives it; Carlos
Magro, Communication and Marketing Director of EOI Industrial Organisation
School gives the prize.
First Prize for “Ecofont” carried out by Gerjon Zomer, Alexander Kraaij, Rick
Van Den Bos / SPRANQ Creative Communications, The Netherlands.
Creative director Alexander Kraaij receives the prize; the scientific director of
the Jury, Ms Rosa Arce, Department of Land Organisation, Town Planning and
Environment of the H.T. School for Road Engineers at the UPM gives the prize.
All the selected candidates received an engraving made by well-known
illustrator and graphic designer Jacobo Pérez Enciso, and the prize winners
also received a sculpture made by sculptor Andres Nagel.
Once the award ceremony was over, Manuel Estrada invited everybody present
to visit the exhibition “Lanube” (Thecloud), showing all the projects registered
for the award, and to enjoy the evening.
By setting up this award, the aim was to develop a platform from which to
encourage and spread as much as possible good practice, whereby design
introduces into the production processes and the products themselves
environmental values and sustainable model patterns that contribute to
improving social and consumer practices and current production processes.
The best_ed Award has been set up and promoted by DIMAD, Madrid
Designers’ Association.
